Tap changers for transformers are the mechanical tools that allow the selection of variable turn ratios in individually distinct and separate steps. Note that, in larger electrical power transformers, for proper voltage regulation, on load tap changers are required for an easy automatic tap change while being energized. with the use of OLTC, it is not required to turn off the transformer in the process, having a high advantage in comparison.
Off-load tap changers are used to change transformer taps after the transformer has been disconnected from (or off) the electric load.
